Rules of Masculinity 60 × 72 inches | Acrylic on Canvas
Rules of Masculinity explores the unwritten expectations placed on boys and men from an early age. Traditional masculinity often teaches that strength means emotional control, vulnerability is weakness, and asking for help is failure. These social and cultural rules can limit emotional expression, making many men feel they must appear tough, stoic, and unaffected regardless of what they are experiencing.
As a result, many men learn to suppress sadness, fear, affection, and grief, replacing them with silence, anger, distraction, or unhealthy coping mechanisms. Even seeking emotional support or healthcare can feel like violating the expectations of manhood.
This painting questions those inherited rules rather than condemning them. It reflects on how generations of men have often passed these beliefs to their sons because they believed they were preparing them for the world. Today, I see vulnerability not as the opposite of strength, but as one of its greatest expressions. This work represents my commitment to breaking generational patterns by embracing honesty, emotional awareness, and compassion.
